The Future of Tourism in the Alpine-Adriatic Region
a short report
The International symposium „The Future of Tourism in the Alpine-Adriatic Region“
In memory of Zlatko Pepeonik, 1934-2004 was organized and held in Hermagor, Carinthia, Austria from 22-24 October 2024 in the co-organization of the IGU Commission C20.32 Marginalization, Globalization and Regional and Local Responses.
The symposium brought together around 40 participants from the Alpe-Adria region, Europe and beyond (India), who very successfully discussed the future of tourism in the face of today's challenges from various perspectives.
A series of presentations analysed the particular challenges in marginalised areas – from transport isolation as a serious obstacle to development to human capital in the face of depopulation and ageing.
Climate change was one of the most prominent topics, which will certainly have a negative impact on marginalised areas, but may also provide new incentives for communities to prove more resilient to change.
A number of our members actively participated at the conference.
