Kim Andreas Kessler is a development geographer and researcher with a strong focus on the Pacific Islands, particularly in the areas of rural development, peripherality, and climate resilience.
He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Otago, New Zealand, where his research explores local development in the context of multiple disasters in remote Pacific outer islands. His work is rooted in participatory approaches, reflecting his background in geography and social sciences and his interest in the lives of people in marginal, remote areas.
Kim holds a BA from the University of Bern (with distinction) and an MA from the University of the South Pacific (with distinction). He has worked at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and taught development geography, environment and society in the Pacific, and urban geography at the University of the South Pacific and the University of Otago.
Kim’s field research spans the Cook Islands, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. He actively contributes to academic networks such as the Aotearoa New Zealand Development Studies Network (DevNet), the Education in Small States Research Group (ESSRG) based at the University of Bristol, the European Association for Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI), the European Society for Oceanists (ESfO), the New Zealand Geographical Society (NZGS), and the IGU Geographical Marginality Commission. Originally from a small town near the Swiss Alps, Kim spent part of his upbringing on an outer island in the Cook Islands, which inspired his academic interests and commitment to development of remote areas.
